Vulcan, in Roman religion, god of fire, particularly in its destructive aspects as volcanoes or conflagrations. Vulcan was invoked to avert fires, as his epithets Quietus and Mulciber (Fire Allayer) suggest. Because he was a deity of destructive fire, his temples were properly located outside the city.
