x + 4x + 12  = 42               {Add like terms}

    5x  + 12 = 42                {Subtract 12 from both sides}

             5x = 42 - 12

         5x/5 = 30/5

x = 6

Smaller number = 6

Larger number = 4*6 + 12 = 24 + 12 = 36
