if this is an open-ended question, i would say they contribute by giving society illustrations to back up certain lessons and morals used to teach people. in the case of greek mythology, myths allowed people a sense of religion and higher power, so that definitely contributes to society as societies values, beliefs, and practices often change with the addition of religion or belief in a higher power.
