Because metallic bonding is non-localized, and extends throughout the metallic lattice. Metal nuclei can move with respect to other metal nuclei without disrupting the forces of attraction.

Answer:  I am not sure of the correct answer but I just took the test on Plato and the answer is not A.  The electrons in metals are shared so that the bond between them is too strong to be broken by pounding.
