"Speed" is the rate at which distance is being covered .... the ratio of distance covered to the time it takes.
"Velocity" is the rate at which distance is being covered .... the ratio of distance covered to the time it takes ... AND the direction in which it is covered. 'Speed' with the direction of the motion.
