Each of the branching in the phylogenetic tree depicts how organisms evolved from a common ancestor. The closer they are to their common ancestors the closer the relationship between the organisms. Each internal node represents a divergence event. Examples of characteristics used in developing phylogenetic trees include morphology, DNA sequence, biochemical pathways, and etcetera.
